Travel trends: the hottest destinations discerning travellers want to go right now

Latest research is showing high-income travellers are prioritising travel, whatever the price. But where are they choosing to go? Here are the latest travel trends.

Virtuoso, the leading global travel agency specialising in luxury and experiential travel has just released its latest travel insights showing high-spend Australasian travellers are looking for multiple big-ticket trips, and have their sights firmly set on a few places.

Topping the list is Japan, with Tokyo in the top five cities that Australians and New Zealanders are booking for 2023.

Other top country contenders were South Africa, and perennial favourites: Singapore, Honolulu, London and Paris.

Trending: expedition cruising

The research also found luxury cruising will continue its domination in 2023, with a spike in expedition cruising.

Virtuoso’s general manager of Australia and New Zealand, Fiona Dalton, says affluent travellers are increasingly seeking access to highly curated and bespoke experiential opportunities when cruising.

“Expedition cruising is the perfect travel style, allowing comfort and highly anticipatory service onboard, accompanied by the most extraordinary shore experiences in the most remote destinations.

“Travellers can explore the far reaches of the Antarctic, visit remote communities along Greenland’s west coast that are inaccessible by road, or cruise the Cape Verde archipelago, off the west coast of Africa, traversing Fogo’s lava landscapes and the dunes of stark Boa Vista.

“Expedition cruising comes in many shapes and sizes, but there is an option for every traveller type and level of drive to push beyond one’s comfort zone.”
