Are Oura Rings the future of wellness tracking?

Do I need an Oura Ring?

That was my question when I first found out about the Oura Ring 4. I was fortunate enough to be able to trial one and now I can say unequivocally that I would never be without it. These days, it’s hard to pick up any wellness publication or news supplement without seeing an article on the benefits of sleep. I didn’t often read them because my sleep was great, or so I thought. What I discovered was enlightening when I started to wear an Oura ring.

PC magazine has rated Oura Ring 4 as the best smart ring on the market and one of the top holistic health trackers overall, and this was the Editor’s Choice Winner for smart rings. This is not surprising as this Finland-based company pioneered the smart ring category. And while accolades like that are impressive, it was my own data that stopped me in my tracks. Oura Ring 4’s in-depth sleep monitoring made me realise just how poor my sleeping pattern was. Within weeks, these detailed sleep insights revealed a pattern I hadn’t suspected: persistently low blood oxygen levels, frequent restlessness throughout the night, little to no deep sleep, and repeated awakenings. Night after night, the same issues appeared.

That data led me to book an appointment with an ENT specialist and to do a sleep study. The results were unexpected but illuminating. My sinuses were almost completely blocked, significantly reducing airflow and oxygen intake during sleep, and contributing to chronic night-time waking and breathing difficulty. When I consulted an ENT specialist in Sydney, he was not surprised by my sleep pattern. Imaging showed my sinuses had likely been obstructed for several years and needed immediate attention. The sleep study also suggested possible sleep apnoea, requiring further specialist follow-up once my sinus issues were addressed.

In January 2026, I underwent sinus surgery. The very next night, my Oura Ring recorded the best sleep results I’d seen since I began wearing it in October the previous year. I can thank my Oura ring for motivating me to seek help with the issues that were shown night after night.

Activity and movement

Rather than focusing purely on calories or step counts, Oura takes a more measured approach to activity, balancing movement with recovery. Automatic Activity Detection identifies a wide range of daily movements and, where relevant, captures heart rate and heart rate zones without manual input. While athletes may still prefer a dedicated sports watch for high-intensity training, Oura excels at showing how activity, stress, and sleep interact over time. For me, that broader context has been far more valuable than chasing performance metrics alone.

Stress

The Daytime Stress feature was one of the more quietly revealing aspects of wearing the Oura Ring. Rather than labelling stress as good or bad, it tracks physiological stress responses throughout the day, using changes in heart rate, heart rate variability, and movement to show when the body is under strain. What makes this particularly useful is context. The app allows you to view stress patterns alongside daily activity and self-added tags, making it easier to see how everyday habits — meetings, travel, exercise, or even a poor night’s sleep — affect your nervous system. Over time, patterns emerge. For me, it was less about eliminating stress and more about understanding when my body needed recovery.

Women’s health

Oura has placed a strong emphasis on women’s health, using subtle shifts in skin temperature to provide insights into hormonal changes across different life stages. Features such as Cycle Insights help predict periods and identify fertility windows, while Pregnancy Insights adapts tracking to reflect the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy. The Fertile Window feature estimates ovulation timing and likelihood of conception, offering useful guidance for women who are trying to conceive or simply want a clearer understanding of their cycle. What sets this apart is that the data is passive and non-invasive, captured automatically during sleep rather than requiring manual input. It’s easy to see why the ring has resonated with women of childbearing age, but its relevance extends beyond fertility, offering longer-term insight into cycle regularity, recovery, and overall wellbeing.

Comfort and design

The titanium design is lightweight, durable and comfortable to wear. There is also a ceramic version available in a range of softer, fashion-forward colours. Oura features recessed sensors for a smooth interior and thinner profile. My gold titanium ring looks like a regular piece of jewellery rather than wearable tech. I initially wore the ring on my left index finger, but found it occasionally brushed my face when sleeping. Switching to my middle finger solved the issue entirely, and it has been comfortable there ever since. It’s a small but important reminder that fit and finger choice do matter with smart rings.

Sensing technology

Rather than relying on a single fixed sensor setup, the Oura Ring 4 uses what the company calls Smart Sensing — a system that dynamically adjusts which sensors are prioritised based on how the ring sits on your finger and what your body is doing. In practical terms, this means more consistent readings across sleep, rest, and everyday movement, without the need for manual adjustments. The benefit isn’t flashy innovation, but reliability: data that remains stable from night to night, which is essential if you’re using long-term trends to understand your health rather than chasing daily fluctuations.

Battery life

Battery performance is another quiet strength. Depending on usage, the ring lasts between five and eight days between charges, making it easy to wear continuously without the constant battery anxiety that comes with many wearables.

App and subscription

Access to Oura’s full suite of insights is delivered through its companion app, available on iOS and Android, with a monthly subscription required for complete reporting and long-term trend analysis. Where the app stands out is in how it translates complex health data into clear, readable insights rather than overwhelming users with raw metrics. Sleep, recovery, stress, and activity data are presented with concise explanations and prompts that make patterns easy to recognise over time.

As noted by PC Magazine, “The companion app makes it easy to understand all of the health and wellness data the smart ring collects.” That clarity is a key reason the Oura Ring 4 has been named an Editor’s Choice winner for smart rings, reinforcing its position as a leading option for holistic health tracking.

Is the Oura Ring 4 worth it?

For me, the value of the Oura Ring 4 lies not in the sheer volume of data it collects, but in the awareness it creates over time. By quietly tracking sleep, recovery, stress, and key physiological patterns, it builds a picture of what is normal for your body — and, just as importantly, when something begins to shift. One of the most compelling aspects of the ring is its ability to flag subtle changes that can indicate early signs of illness or physiological strain, often before you consciously feel unwell. Elevated resting heart rate, suppressed HRV, or changes in body temperature trends can act as early warning signals, prompting rest, recovery, or further investigation.

What sets the Oura Ring 4 apart is its emphasis on prevention rather than reaction. It encourages attention to sleep quality, recovery, and consistency — areas that are frequently overlooked until a problem becomes unavoidable. In my own case, those insights proved pivotal. As a long-term health companion rather than a performance gadget, the Oura Ring 4 earns its place as a genuinely useful tool — one that supports informed decisions, promotes self-awareness, and helps you act earlier rather than later. For me, the Oura Ring 4 didn’t just highlight data — it prompted action, revealing sleep issues I didn’t know existed and ultimately changing how I think about my health long term.
