With world-renowned wines, a five-star hotel designed by Frank Gehry, a Michelin-starred restaurant and a Caudalie spa all set within historic grounds, this award-winning vineyard is the best winery in the world.
On 4 November 2024, the gourmet organisation World’s Best Vineyards revealed the top 50 wine destinations for 2024, showcasing wineries that provide unforgettable wine experiences, and promote wine culture. This year, Bodegas De Los Herederos Del Marqués De Riscal located in Elciego (Álava), Spain was named the best winery in the world. Marqués de Riscal was established in 1858 and while the estate has built its reputation upon its amazing wines, its iconic architecture, hotel, spa and Michelin-starred restaurant have become destinations in their own right.
Visit the best winery in the world: Bodegas De Los Herederos Del Marqués De Riscal
Visitors to the estate can see the English Garden, Plaza del Reloj (Square of the Sun Dial) and the original bodega built in 1860 which houses the bottle cellar of ancient drops. The El Palomar building is where many of the estate’s wines are now made, while the wine shop and cafeteria offer a menu of tapas and – of course – a selection of wines. Visitors can join one of three organised tours of the property, each of which includes a tasting and refreshments. The best winery in the world can be explored by foot, bike or horse, with golf and paddle tennis on offer as well. The surrounding medieval town of Elciego will immerse all who visit in the local history and culture.

Stay at Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel
Showcasing twisting aluminium architecture by post-modern designer Frank Gehry, the five-star Hotel Marqués de Riscal has become emblematic of The Marqués de Riscal City of Wine. The hotel is the only hotel created by Gehry and the 21st-century chateau houses 61 rooms and suites, spread across two buildings linked by an impressive raised walkway. Inside, the interior design is bold, saturated and tactile, presenting an artful use of colours and furnishings from Aalvar Alto and B&B Italia. Guests enjoy incredible views of the countryside and the medieval town of Elciego, and have easy access to the fine dining restaurants and spa that have come to set the best winery in the world apart from other vineyards.
