Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, Vietnam resort review

Tina-Louise Jackson uncovers what makes Six Senses Ninh Van Bay the ultimate remote island hideaway.

Hidden along a dramatic crescent of coastline and accessible only by boat, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is a place where luxury and wilderness blend seamlessly. Set against a backdrop of towering jungle-clad mountains and lapped by clear waters, this remote peninsula feels worlds away from the bustle of nearby Nha Trang.

Location

Accessible only by water via a 20-minute speedboat ride from Nha Trang City, a 60-minute drive from Cam Ranh Airport. Cam Ranh Airport is an easy one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City, with multiple flights daily.

First impressions

Our journey starts in the air-conditioned luxury at the Six Senses Lounge, a cooling welcome drink in hand whilst we wait for our speedboat transfer. We’re soon zipping across the bay, and just 20 minutes later, we catch our first glimpse of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. Dramatic to say the least: golden sand hugging crystal-clear water, lush greenery spilling down the hillside and remarkable rock formations set against the cinematic backdrop of Heo Mountain.

As we dock, the team gathers to welcome us and we mark our arrival with the resonant strike of the gong – a traditional Vietnamese ritual welcoming new visitors to the community. Moments later, we’re whisked away on a buggy tour of the resort, winding through green-lined pathways towards our villa.

The Signature factor

The location has to be up there. Remote, yet easy to reach for a real Robin Crusoe experience – aptly described by Six Senses as the ultimate illusionist island escape.

However, it’s the three-bedroom Rock Retreat that gets my vote. Sunset facing, in its own private bay, the child in me craves a whizz down the waterslide into my private plunge pool on the rocks.

The room

With 62 villas to choose from – from hilltop to beachfront – each with its own private pool and ranging from one to three bedrooms, we settle into one of the 24 Beachfront Pool Villas. It’s a roomy 176 square metre two-storey villa, snuggled into the lush greenery with direct beach access.

Downstairs houses a canopied queen-size bed, ensuite bathroom with a hand-crafted wooded bathtub and separate shower. The spacious open-plan living area upstairs makes the most of the sea breezes, ocean-view and glimpses of sunset.

Staying in

Your GEM (Guest Experiences Maker) will help you make the most of your time at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, booking activities and restaurant reservations (as well as ensure you get to each appointment on time with prompt buggy service, should you choose not to take the personalised bicycle parked outside your villa).

There’s a central hub to the resort with a boutique, complimentary ice cream at Deli Corner available from 11am to 4.30pm daily, along with a main swimming pool.

The spa at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is tucked into the hillside. The wellness village includes treatment pavilions, a meditation sala, steam rooms and a dedicated yoga deck overlooking the canopy, where I take a yoga session as the sun begins to set. Signature therapies draw on Vietnamese healing traditions, while multi-day wellness programs integrate personalised fitness, nutrition, sleep and mindfulness sessions. I positively float back to my villa after my 60-minute Vietnamese massage, a traditional treatment designed to improve circulation and rejuvenate.

Perched high on the hilltop, guests can join workshops at the Alchemy Bar to create their own scrubs, oils and herbal remedies with local ingredients. In my session we craft traditional Vietnamese incense cones.

On my plate

There are three dining options to choose from during your stay at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay:

Dining By The Bay – at the east end of the resort, perched on the rocks and making the most of the sea breezes. Mornings start here with a delicious breakfast, serving local, Asian and Western favourites and fresh juices. By evening, the restaurant serves local dishes and freshly caught seafood as the sun sets and lights twinkle across the bay.

Dining by the Pool serves lunch and dinner with a sea view, an open kitchen and pizza-oven serving Mediterranean and international dishes.

Dining by the Rocks is a unique dining destination, open twice a week. Perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the bay, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or intimate dining experience with friends or family.

For something extra special, Dine in the Wine Cave is a private and cosy space in a natural wine cellar for a unique intimate dining experience.

Green thumbs up

As with every Six Senses stay, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay walks the talk of sustainability that supports and protects the local environment and promotes sustainable luxury. The resort’s sustainability ethos – solar power, organic gardening and zero-waste initiatives – doesn’t feel like a feature. It simply feels like the way this place was always meant to be.

Partnering with GreenViet, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay has played a vital role in helping the critically endangered black-shanked douc langur population grow from 109 to 194 since 2019. These shy creatures are masters at keeping to themselves, but if you’re lucky, you might just spot one during your stay. And if not, the soft toy langur waiting in your villa offers another way to contribute – 100% of its revenue goes directly towards conservation efforts. Take it home, support the cause and who knows… perhaps on your next visit, one of these gentle forest dwellers will reveal itself.

The family factor

Six Senses love families as much as families will love Six Senses. With two- and three-bedroom villas available, there’s room to spread out and for the kids to learn more about responsible tourism. Vooc Village is Six Senses Ninh Van Bay’s complimentary club for the under 11s, offering a variety of activities focused on adventure, nature and creativity, including an aqua gym, jungle gym and indoor play centre. And of course, there is complimentary ice cream that the entire family will love.

I wish I could take home…

The sense of tranquillity and peace. A calm that settles over you the moment you arrive at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. Far from the charming chaos of the mainland, it’s a place where you can simply breathe.

Insider tips

Check the weekly schedule for opening days of the restaurants. During our stay, dinner alternated between Dining by the Bay and Dining by the Pool. If yours is a short stay, you may miss dining at both venues if you don’t plan ahead.
